I read Sally McGraw's fabulous blog, Already Pretty for her discerning eye. Her latest post contains information about the most pleasing proportion for separates. This is something that the eye "knows" but I don't always follow, for instance when I wear tee tops and blouses I am sometimes more concerned about covering "tummy fluff". Now I'll have to spend more critical time in front of a mirror. Here's an illustration, copied directly from her blog:
